More!

Here's a gem from the Seldom Scene.

Wait A Minute...

Good Gospel number...

Don't You Call My Name

Remember when I said I couldn't find that song? Well, that's only because I really didn't try very hard.

Here it is.

Johnson Mountain Boys

Dailey and Vincent

Dailey and Vincent Show Was Good

Maybe if I feel like it later, I'll write more. They were good. Dailey was taught at Doyle Lawson's side, and the show borrowed a lot of the good from Doyle.

They played a tune I liked that I'd first heard from the Johnson Mountain Boys.
I couldn't find THAT song, but here's another from the late, great, Johnson Mountain Boys.

Osborne!

It's funny what you find on the Internet, and even funnier, some of it's non-pornographic!

I was listenin' to my IPod thingy, and I heard one of my faves, Tony Rice playing "I've Waited as Long as I Can." I thought to myself, "Self, we should do this with the JBs!"
So I set out to find it online to share with my breres de Java, and who comes up on the first link? Our old pal Matt Osborne, who's picture is in the dictionary next to "Fast in the Key of B."

I missed the Jam

I was in DC hangin' with a couple million of my fellow Amerkins.

It was awful cold, and we never got too close to anything, but there was plenty good vibes to soak up.

And we soaked em up good!

Omen note: We saw what we think was a wild fox running through Arlington on Monday. Good omen? Bad? I choose good.

Surfin the Nets!

Christian found this one...

Love me some Newgrass Revival.

Cold picks, hot licks

We had a nice little jam last night. Missed a few regulars -- several, really -- and the crowd was down a bit, probably due to the cold.

George, Jasonalex, Nancy, Doug C., Richard and a few of us held down the fort for a while before reinforcements arrived in the form of PJ, Scott, Brian and others.

Tim Pak, our new friend from Michigan, laid down some nice dobro licks, Joe sang and picked with wild abandon, Ken and Frankie played rhythm and me and little brother joined right in there. Apologies to anyone I missed.

Played lots of standards early, mixed it up later with "Shenandoah Breakdown," "Bill Cheatam," "Pike County Breakdown" and some tunes and songs I forget. Oh yeah, a young college boy arrived who picked and chopped the mandolin with great enthusiasm.

The Coffee Mill Jam

It was a good one last night. What would be a bad one? I don't know. The joint was packed as usual. A ton of fiddlers, which is a sea change for us. Ralph, Doug, Sloane, Richard, and Miss Sandra really showing some skill.

Others can post - it was just another good ol jam. Lots of good pickers including some new faces (new to us - they were old, har har!) and a good time.

I had the notion to make a little movie, so here it is.

If you've never been, this is more or less what the jam is like week after week, year after year.

Side Door Ten

A big, big "Thanks a lot!" first of all to all the musicians and audience participants who keep coming out and making the Side Door happen. It ain't no party if nobody shows up. Other than the leaky roof and the running out of coffee cups, I think most of the memories will be musical.

The Side Door is fun to put on, but there are a bunch of tasks involved with it. I generally avoid major stress involved with the Side Door by telling myself (reminding myself) that "Hey, this is just a music club and we're here to have a good time, not to see the London Symphony Orchestra.
Ultimately, that's easier said than done and I do fret about the lineups, the sound, the coffee cups, the fire marshal, and most importantly the risk of embarrassing myself by playing terribly. A cycle has developed where this fretting increases through Side Door Saturdays and peaks at near misery at about 5PM on the day of a Side Door. That's that bad part of my cycle.

The great part of the cycle comes next. People start showing up, the room starts filling up, and I feel my mood elevate. Then I have a swing down when I see that real crowd that will demand real entertainment, and then I swing back up when the music starts, and we have an awesome time all around. After the scheduled acts, when only the die-hard jammers remain, I enter the mellow phase of the cycle, where I lurk around the corners of the room, unplugging cables, throwing out dirty paper plates and whatnot as I listen to the open jam. It's always good, and always fun. I might jump in and play one or two, but usually I'm kind of wiped and I really do like to listen to these guys. The last part of the cycle is Sunday, when I am usually pretty beat, when I listen to the tapes from the night before and go through the whole thing again in my head.

Evaluations are subjective, but this SD was a nice one. The sound was good, (or at least not noticeably problematic), the musical menu was a little different, and the turnout was quite nice. I love it when I see new faces-it's very good for the health of the event. Dale did a bang up job taking on the MC-ing. I thought Joe was a real highlight. A big "Thanks!" to Mary and John for bringing the cake. (A big "Bad Dog!" to Dr. Carl's dog who ate the cookies he baked for the show.)

John and Mary Madis made the SD their own, and did what I hope will become a regular practice for audiences - they packed a super gourmet picnic of treats and spread it out on their table. This whole thing is about having a good time, and I'm glad they did and I hope their friends had a fine time and will return as well.
We got some original music from Chris, Casey, and Bill. I hope more musicians will risk an original or two -it's also a good thing for the health of the event.

Who did I see?
Bill and Brian,Chris and Casey, MC Dale,Lewis, Coffee Mill Stephen (getting some bass tips), Slash, all the JBs (good set guys!), local music aficionado Kevin Clack, Sandra and pals, Timmy Mills, Scott and his excellent bass playing singing pal Rodney, the Fryes, Chelsea, Jessica, Wilson and Liz, Laurie, Jim Kern, Dr Carl, Larry, Dave and Ken, Ken Richards and his new camera (and mando!), the Abercrombies, Dave Diesel, Jason and a buncha others!

Thanks again ever'body and we'll see youz again in Feb!

Rested and Ready

The Coffee Mill squad tore it up tonight. It was a good turnout (as usual at this point, no?) and the caffeine was ripping through their veins. I got there late, but I heard a lotta good pickin. Wayne tore up his newly acquired Martin and started a new era at the jam, I have no doubt. George picked a buncha good ones, Joe was sick, Casey picked a few and split, Christine and Isabella left Chris behind and he picked a few he could remember including No Hiding Place, Rawhide, Roll On(e) Buddy, the Vincent Black Lightning, and Prayer Bells of Heaven. Ralph busted out the Orange Blossom Special. Too long since we heard that one. We played Cheynenne and Southern Flavor from Doug Dalton. Scott Patrick showed up with his new guitar, and we got into California Cotton Fields and Bad Moon Risin'. There was a really nice How Great Thou Art, a fine Blackjack...what else? A good ol' Billy in the Lowground.

I can't remember what all after that, but tons of great tunes.

Good job y'all and I'll see yuz at the Side Door Saturday night.

Happy New Year!

My resolution is to play real good, or at least improve my right/wrong note ratio.

Java Brothers ride again at the Side Door January 10th!

Don't miss it!!!

Everybody get on board for a great 2009.
