It was a cold one last night!

Interesting jam though. Kind of uneventful, but we pulled out some songs from deeper in the song book and had a good time.

I got there late. Maybe it was different before I got there. Wayne's en fuego on guitar these days.

Another Side Door Done Gone on!

We had another fun Side Door, this one interesting in a number of ways.
We had more variety in the music than we've had in the past, spotlighting the dulcimers, bodhran (sp?), and flute of Simple Gifts of the Blue Ridge. We also had old time fiddle and banjo, "contemporary eclectic" folk, and more straight up bluegrass.

Big thanks to Dale for his great big MC-in!

I'll probably write more later, but here's a snapshot of one of our bands.

I've been wanting to get some old time fiddle and banjo into the Side Door since we started, and finally, thanks to Bob Browder, we got some.
Bob was scheduled to play with Russ Boyd, but Russ couldn't make it. I think it was our lucky day, though, cause Bob brought Mary Predny with him, and they fired up some fiddle and banjo duets that got some flat footin' afoot!

Bob Browder and Mary Predny:

Thanks to everybody who came out! I saw lots of new faces and got lots of emails from folks who wished they coulda made it, but couldn't, so I think this thing is officially thriving.

Mandolin Night -- Every Monday!

Yes siree, that was quite the doin's down at The Coffee Mill Monday night. On a chilly winter's eve when the mercury Benjamin Buttoned it down into the teens, the following array of stringed instruments encircled the premises ...

Mandolins: 5 (one with only 7 strings)
Fiddles: 4
Banjos: 3
Guitars: 4 (at least)
Bass: Uno!

That's 98 strings ... not counting Chris's busted mandolin catgut. Why do mandolin players think they're so hot they need 8 strings anyway?

And, we had a full, caffeinated crew of listeners. Some folks had to stand or sit on tables. Next: Dancing on tables!

Radford Fiddle and Banjo Jam: Nine Years and Counting

The jam whipsawed into its 10th year of existence Monday night, with a large crowd cramming into a space that was as hot and steamy as a Coffee Mill cappuccino. The date fell pretty close to the anniversary of the first jam, which was held Feb. 7, 2000. I've written about the history of the jam previously on this blog, so I won't get into that. You can check out radfordfiddle.com for a brief recap.

Senie Gal made her once-in-a-full-moon appearance, her ever-growing boy Harlow with her (he's 5 now). Asenath sang a buncha old familiar songs, that some of us have forgotten how to play! She and Wayne vocalized some sweet, Dan-and-Alison (Robert-and-Alison?)-style harmonies, and Bro. Frye busted out some of his new'uns: "He Walked All the Way to Texas," "Stuck in the Middle of Nowhere" and "Wait a Minute" among them.

Honest Chris Burgoyne, who's obviously been too busy growing a beard(just in time for Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday) to come to the jam, led us thru "Blue Night" and he FIDDLED, yes, FIDDLED "Red-Haired Boy"!!! I guess everybody thinks they can play the fiddle these days! Practically everybody who walks in now is carrying a fiddle case! "If THAT guy thinks he can do it," they say, waving their bows mockingly in my direction, "then I know I can do it!"

Doug D, Richard and Bob B. were other fiddlists. Somebody must've called Clawhammer Appreciation Day, because Ross, Sam L. and Tim P. all frailed away -- even going outside to engage in a little old-time frivolity on a warm night.

Jason and Asenath performed some nice double-banjer breakdowns, Doug Cappaucino kept us all in line and in time, earning his weekly bass-solo standing O, Kendall was in rare form (he had a rowdy fan club in attendance; musta been the full moon!), Nancy and Frankie laid down serious rhythm, Don Hall made an appearance ... anybody I'm forgetting? It was a big night, fun and loud. Good show.

Goldrush on the Git-tar

For anybody tryin' to polish up their flattop licks...

Goldrush!

I love Youtube.

How'd the Jam Go?

Scheduling conflict combined with exhaustion induced unconsiousness thwarted by efforts to attend.

Everything Must Go - for the Crash of 2008 and onward.

I've thought since the first time I heard it, that Del McCoury should record this.
