A blog for bluegrass fans to talk about bluegrass or whatever and to check up on the Java Brothers Bluegrass Band from Radford, Virginia. We are progressive, but pretty much only to the extent that we'll play new songs as hard driving bluegrass. We love Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, The Seldom Scene, JD Crowe, Tony Rice, Sam Bush, the Country Gentlemen, the Beatles, the Stones, and all the greats.

The jams have been particularly outstanding this year (all three of 'em). We seem to be able to strike that balance between red-hot pickin' and easy jam sing-alongs. We raise the bar each week, but we don't raise it so far that only a few people can sail over it. We're still a pretty welcoming group -- at least I hope we come across that way.
I think the jam is still pretty much as it has always been. Welcoming and entertaining are two words that always come to mind. It seems to be an "event" on Monday nights in Radford now. I agree that the pickin' has gotten better and we continue to get new folks playin' and listenin'.
You got yourself a good thing started there, Ralph. You outta feel something like a proud papa!!
The Mill needs to buy out one of their neighbors and give us more space. They owe us!!!!!!!
We have a good problem in the sense that if you don't get there early (which I never do) you can barely squeeze in. Tons of great pickers show up, and a whole slew of pickers have been trained at the jam. If that's not a community service, I don't know what is. And kudos to Ralph for always being there. We've said this before, but for a jam to survive, you need a leader, someone who's there no matter what. For this jam, that's Ralph, and that's why this jam has lasted.
The openness doesn't hurt either. The fact that this jam encourages new jammers to try breaks rather than having some kind of king-of-the-mountain cutting contest is hugely important.
Where else can a slob like me play with visitors like Butch Robins, Ron Stewart, or Scott Fore?
Nowhere! And every week I get to play with champs like Wayne, Ralph, Joe, Doug, George, Brian, Bill, Sloane, Asenath, Timmy, Jason, and all the other axe slingers who come in on a daily basis. For anybody who is looking to learn, come out to the jam regularly, and you'll know the songbook in and out. I should get at least 25 cents for this kind of endorsement!
This jam raises property values!
Forgot Casey, Vernon, and Slash on my Ace list. I'll bet I forgot some others, too. There's a million of em!
