A blog for bluegrass fans to talk about bluegrass or whatever and to check up on the Java Brothers Bluegrass Band from Radford, Virginia.
We are progressive, but pretty much only to the extent that we'll play new songs as hard driving bluegrass. We love Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, The Seldom Scene, JD Crowe, Tony Rice, Sam Bush, the Country Gentlemen, the Beatles, the Stones, and all the greats.
Rider - I always associated this song with the Grateful Dead, but I'm beginning to suspect that most Bluegrass people are thinking of the Scene version.
Frank Vignola made a couple AWESOME swing albums with Mark O'Connor with O'Connor naturally on the fiddle. Here's Mark playing guitar on the Beaumont Rag with Byron Berline and Sam Bush.
We tried some new things, we had some great new performers, we had a record crowd! Thanks to everyone who played, and thanks so much to everybody who came and listened.
I put a note out about the Side Door Sessions to the New River Old Time listserve. I got a reply back from a number of folks, including Chris Printz, who introduced me to Ben Gilmer, who led me to Rachel Eddy. There's a ton of good music out there!
Hi y'all! The Side Door is back in action on Saturday night, January 19th. On a cold winter's night, what better way to spend your time than to kick back with some friends and listen to some great live acoustic music? (Am I wrong? I'm not wrong...)
Returning to our stage will be mandolin monster Brian Muller, Asenath and friends, Jim Kern, Dale Cash and most if not all of your very own Java Brothers.
We're aiming for another night of fun and music. We hope you'll come out and support Radford's music scene.
The fiscal Bluegrass New Year starts on 1/8, as you all know. Wayne, it's a tune everyone should know so get online for some tab and a youtube version! Get crackin'!
Get your butts down to the Mill and pick a few for me as I'll be in the great state of NJ come jam time. I'll be up in the land of Tex Logan, that's right north Jersey! (Look it up!)
Don't be afraid to bust out a new tune on the jam, they can handle it.
In further notes, don't forget to mark your calendars:
January 11th(this Friday!) the Java Brothers are on at the Floyd Country Store from 7:30 to 9:00.
January 19th (next Saturday!) the Side Door Sessions are back on with tons of music and fun. That's 7:00 till 10:00 at the Side Door (3rd and Grove, 2nd Floor) in Radford City!
February 2nd (fast approaching!) the Java Brothers play in Blacksburg for the 2nd annual Ho Down for a Cure.
If you've not made your summer plans yet, think about this one...
Greyfox (formerly Winterhawk) is a great festival up in New York. The lineup this year (like most) is pretty phenomenal, and apparently it'll be the last one on the hill, as the Rothvoss Farm that has hosted the site for so many years has been sold.
The story is that they're looking for a new site, but who knows how it all will end.
I've got limited family budget that has to accommodate a trip to Asia in May, so it will be difficult for me to make it to say the least, but between the lineup and the memories of good times I've had there, I'm salivating.
Chief band booster Christine gave the superest of all gifts with the H4 recorder from Zoom. I love, love, love it so far, and the band seems happy as well. It makes a really sweet, super clear recording just with the two condenser mikes built into it. It can also do a line in recording, but I haven't even got to that yet.
We had a practice over at Joe's to get ready for our Jan 11 show at the Floyd Country Store, and I made us a recording. Here's a sample for all 10 of our supporters!
Also Happy Hannukah, Kickin' Kwanzaa and Fine Festivus!
2007 was pretty good overall, wasn't it? Sure we had the worst school massacre in history, and while it dogs my mind personally, there were plenty of catastrophes world wide just about every day that dwarfed it. So I'm thankful to have survived and thrived for another year. Anything that doesn't kill me makes me stronger. If I can just differentiate between surviving and being killed slowly, I'll be alright.
2008 will be great, up to date, first rate, clean slate. Look out for the Java Brothers to knock your socks off in January. We'll be at the Floyd Country Store on 1.11.08, and at the Side Door in Radford on January 19th.
We've got a big show planned for October 15th, 2011. The Java Brothers and the Porch Loungers will be there, and other friends, too! As usual, doors open at 7 and music starts at 7:30.
We're always looking for more acts and ways to improve the Sessions. Please send all suggestions to me at chris.burgoyne@gmail.com. I'd love to hear from you. Hugs and kisses!
And just because I like it, and sometimes I want to know, here's the time right now in Manila!
